January Yarnstars - Utopia DK Designer Challenge

Due to the popularity of last year's 12 months of Knitmas, we decided we wanted to create another Facebook group to get everybody involved.

Cygnet Yarnstars offers budding designers the chance to have a go at designing something using just one ball of our yarn. Group members are invited to apply for the challenge - we then select five entries at random who then get posted two balls of yarn - one to practice with and one to use in their design. The competitors then send their pics in with their patterns and we run a facebook poll where all group members get the chance to vote for their favourite. The winner then gets the choice of prize of a pack of 10 x 100g balls from our range.

January's entrants all had to make something using our Utopia DK in Fairy Glen. We were stunned at the talent out there, as all entries were awesome! January's winner was Thelma Talloo with her incredible Sara's Blenheim scarf. You can see all of the entries below with links to their Ravelry page or some of our designers have even supplied free pattern links!

January's competition wasn't without drama (**see below), but we think we've ironed out the problems and potential for any confusion!

WINNER: THELMA TALLOO AND SARA'S BLENHEIM SCARF

This ingenious scarf design features slots in on end to thread the other end of the scarf through. My scarves are always slipping off and ending up in puddles, so this really is a super idea.

Thelma has reported having incredible success with this pattern on Ravelry following the competition and you can buy her pattern here.

Runner up: Jay Cutts Fairy Ladders Finger-less Gloves

These fabulous long length gloves are knit in the round with only one small seam above the thumb. Jay at Cutterly Knitted has been generous enough to offer a 10% discount to anybody reading this blog - the discount can be used against any pattern in her Ravelry shop until the end of the year! Click here to buy the pattern and use offer code 'CYGNET10'!

Runner up: elaine Mills one ball slouchy socks

These fabulously cosy socks are made using one ball of our Cygnet Utopia DK in Fairy Glen. They are knit flat on regular needles, so no need for fiddly dpns! Elaine hasn't sent in her pattern, but I'm sure if you contact her via the Facebook group, she would be more than happy to oblige!!

Runner up: Sonya Stone's One ball fingerless gloves

The rib effect on these gloves gives them a beautiful detail. These would be perfect for keeping cosy on the school run! A perfect quick project for Spring too! Sonya has given the first 100 people to download her pattern 50p off using offer code 'lovecygnetyarns'. You can download Sonya's pattern from Ravelry here.

Runner up: jenny bayley's crocheted mermaid notebook cover

This fabulous crocheted design would make the perfect gift - I'm going to have to make one for my daughter. The tassel adds an extra bit of charm. Click here to download Jenny's pattern from Ravelry.

You can join the Facebook group here to keep up to date with each month. If you would like to enter for future months, just message us on Facebook and we will be in touch if you are selected!!

Also, please feel free to use this group as a place to share your projects and to chat to other knitters and crocheters. Share the love <3

**as mentioned above, in January there was some confusion over the prize and what constituted a *pack* of yarn. However, we have now made it very clear what the competition winner will receive - if you're unsure, please do just drop us a line. We set up this group as a place for like minded people to share their craft and as a bit of fun. We will remove anybody who makes rude comments towards other members. Be kind to each other ;)
